Banning the "N" word

I heard of a news story out of New York, about the city trying to ban the "N" word. (You know which one). I think it is the worst idea to come out of any city, in the history of the United States. A city that plans to abandon the first amendant all together. What's next? After the "N" ban will come "jigaboo", "spook", "for shizzle my nizzle", then words like "chink", "gook"? How about banning "fag" or "homo"? British people won't be able to get there cigarettes, and milk lovers without a lot of time on their hands will have to start saying homogonized instead of "homo". This is a case of the neo-liberals taking over and starting to tell people what they can and can't say. Pathetic!!! The problem is racism, not the words that people use in refering to themselves or against others.

I have mixed feelings on this. I think that if you take the power from the word itself, it loses any relevance or meaning.

But, being a white boy, I have never had the experience of being treated badly just because I am a nigger. So, I tend to let the final judgement on this one go to the people who this term actively hurts. (i.e. I stay out of it. If the word disappeared forever, it wouldn't hurt my feelings so I don't have anything vested in attempting to protect a slur with hundreds of years of bad history).

Re: your comment on my blog- Yeah, I try not to use it in conversation unless it is absolutely necessary to the point I am making. But, again- It's got it's shock value, even to a non-black. I believe thats useful in pointing out the inherent racism of the word. You know, it's NOT just a word anymore. There's too much blood and hate surrounding the word. Although I was using in my above comment to point out that- I kind of feel embarrassed about it now. I think its better to relegate it to the trashbin on our own- not that it requires legislation to do so.But, hey thanks for helping me realize that.
